okinawa trip: day 04
20th September. It was the first wedding anniversary for us. The strong wind was still blowing because of a typhoon. No ships leave a port, our plan going to the Tokashiki island was postponed till next time. We went to the Makishi public market instead.

There were smoked sea snakes, parts of pigs and strange fish (I know they are beautiful in the sea)! Scary. If we paid the cooking fee (¥500), we could eat (If we wanted to) those fish in a cafe on the second floor. I said "We have no time" and took some photographs and disappeared. Sorry.

We went to a small dried bonito shop near the market. I've never seen a shop which sells only dried bonito. Many pieces of bonito were tidily arranged in front of the shop. An old gentleman sat on the chair, and he was taking care of a piece of bonito, listening to a television. I asked him whether he can scrape only a little bit of bonito into flakes for me. He said "Is 500g OK?" and opened a fridge to examine a good one. "This dried bonito better than the one over there." he started to scrape it by an electric machine. The flakes were quite thick (not like the fluffy one we buy from a supermarket) and it was only ¥500. "Whaaaaaat?!" I had raised my voice. I couldn't believe it. He sealed up a plastic bag and told me to store it "in a freezer; the one you make ice cubes" with a gentle smile. It was very heart warming place! I will come to see you again!

For me, that was the best shop (or stall?) we went to on the whole trip. The old guy was so nice and the katsuo pieces looked really amazing, like wood. How does he make them? I really wanted to pick one up but in the end I didn't ask.

Yes, it was very very nice stall (not a shop probably). I'm glad that we found his stall from lots of stalls. My mum used to scraped a dried bonito by hand using a special plane. Here is information how to make dried bonito. Very impressive animation on the toppage.

I got this link from a friend. I'm looking for the location of a shop that sells those chunks of fish so I can send another friend of mine (who lives in Okinawa) down to buy some for me. I used to live in Okinawa and bought myself one of those planes to shave the fish. It's a little wooden box with sharp blades and a roller bar to make the shaving easier. I just can't seem to obtain the fish anywhere in the U.S. and am thinking I'll have to go to the source. It would help me greatly if you know the location or name of the mall in which that stall is doing business. Is it near Kadena AB, or is it in Naha, or some other city?

Hi Doug, my mother used to use a plane too. I guess it's a lot of work to use a plane but I'm sure it tastes great!
This Makishi public market in Naha is very famous. The address is 2-10-1 Matsuo, Naha City, Okinawa. It's near Mitsukoshi department store on Kokusai street. The market might be closed on Sunday. I've been to Okinawa just once two years ago, and I really liked the place. I hope your friend can get some Katsuobushi for you.
