liquorice
We asked our friend to bring German sweet Salzige Heringe (salty herring). This liquorice shaped like herring and outside is a little bit salty. Not many people knows about liquorice in Japan and unfortunately all my friends (who I insisted to try one) absolutely hated it. It is called kanzou (sweet herb) or licorice here and used with medical supplies, such as medicine or throat candy.

When I first tried liquorice, I felt like I was chewing coal tar or tire and I spat it out immediately. I probably started to become liking it after trying Finnish liquorice Tyrkisk peber (Turkish pepper). This is also quite salty and even spicy, but sweet at the same time ... become addicted to this unusual taste. (some people doesn't!) I found out that brown sugar I ate in Okinawa was a little bit similar to liquorice somehow.

Katzen Pfötchen(cat's little paw) has really nice little paw on type face on. So cute! This is unsalty version of Salzige Heringe. I never had the courage trying British liquorice Bertie Bassett's because of the color. Pink and black... I like the character Harry Bassett though.

The people who doesn't eat liquorice have no problem, but if you love it a lot ... male and female may have to be careful (do you believe?). Also doesn't seem like good for hypertensive.

I am one of the unusual ones that looove salty licorice. My introduction to salty licorice was also Turkish Pepper (that my Norwegian housemates had). I thought it was disgusting at first but because they eat it sooo oishiso-ni, I was tempted to try it again and.. yet again and eventually fell for it. たんによくばりなだけ?

I've also tried something very similar to Salty Herring but it's Danish. They are shaped like fish and called something Herring or the other... My Danish friend Lisbet brought some for me from Denmark recently. This salty, sweetness is totally addictive! Bassett's Licorice Allsorts has a very different taste to the salty variety though. They taste sweet and slighty caramelly? Hmmm hard to describe. I love Bassett's as well, anyway.

Sorry to go on.. (a bit excited about this licorice topic!). I remember a time when Kathrine (Norwegian) made vodka shots by crushing a bag of Turkish Pepper and soaking it in a bottle of Absolut. She then put the bottle in the freezer for several hours. The shots were absolutely delicious! Cold and syrupy and burning peppery aftertaste at the end!

I had the vodka @ your party! I think Stein (Norwegian) brought it at that time. Ahhh, I wanna drink it!!!

And I didn't know that Bassett's liquorice Allsorts is tasty too! I didn't see anyone (and you Keiko!) eating them around me in Lonon. You should have told me! I missed it! Carsten told me he likes them too!

Sorry I disagree ... I've NEVER liked Bassetts Liquorice Allsorts. Yuk! They look kind of cool & chotto '80's design wise, but Liquorice is a bit like marmite - either you love it or you hate it. So, as far as I'm concerned Jun chan, you didn't miss out on much!

I'm intrigued by the Salty Herrings though ...

We'll try to keep some for you, Lucinda. But I can't promise because I like the idea of liquorice vodka.

it has to be hard licorice like turkish pepper to make the licorice vodka, carsten. don't think it'll work with salty herrings! bassetts licorice allsorts are great!! i don't care what you say! sorry jun chan but i started getting into them not so long ago. I too was originally misguided buy it's garish colour scheme...

by the way marks & spencer's licorice allsorts is much better than the bassett's licorice allsorts. I'll send you a pack if you like jun chan.

Kai told me that Bassett's all sorts is not nice (because it's too sweet). Maybe I will wait (even from M&S) till next time! Thanks Keiko! I found several web sites we can buy Turkish Pepper online. This shop seems ok. I might order some for liquorice vodka!

Hi Mirri, I did a quick research on internet but I couldn't find any information. I guess you tried the same already... Can anyone help Mirri?

I noticed that you tried the blue Tyrkisk Peber. It's also available in three other varieties: multicolour (pepper fruit drops), yellow (the standard, but taste more of licorice) and red (more pepper extract, very spicy). The red is my favourite, but my foreign friends like the yellow ones most.

Hi Tommi, welcome to LDK! Yes, I tried the blue one. I love it! All other flavours sounds good too. I must visit Scandinavia and Finland someday!!
