pottery class
Yesterday, my sister took me to a pottery class. I think I did pottery once during the art foundation course but I was completely a beginner. I tried not to make rubbish at least.

First, I tried hand-building technique without a potters wheel, it is good for beginners. But my clay turned to unexpected shape. Mine is the bowl on the left on the 4th picture. Doesn't it look like ARABIA (Iittala) / Teema' cereal bowl a bit? I wanted to make something I will use, so I made simple chopsticks rests. Using bamboo skewers to make ends curve.

After I got a feel for the clay, I used a potters wheel. It was so difficult! The instructor who had a perfect command of clay looked like a magician to me. Even my piece was wobbly and fell down, I couldn't put the clay back on top of the wheel. Kneading clay with this machine (looks like a machine to mince meat, but clay isn't minced) to remove air, and the instructor knead it more so that it has an even consistency without air bubbles, with a correct moisture content. Finally we can use the clay again for a wheel. I didn't want to waste the kneaded clay so I just played (or fight?) a little bit. After firing artworks, it might fall in pieces sometimes, but I don't mind if it is happened to my bowl...

nice! I love making pots on the wheel. Haven't done it for years though. The clay kneading is always really hard work though. I like your chopstick rests! Reminds me how much I want to make something 'hands on'.

Yeah, it was so fun. But I realised how NON creative I am! I didn't mention anyone there that I'm a designer...

Hi danielle, I don't really know any pottery classes or anyone who take classes in Tokyo. This studio was at a college somewhere near Ikebukuro. I'm not very sure but Foreign Residents Information Desk in Meguro City Office in Nakameguro might help you. Good luck!
