This candy is called 'ito-hiki ame (pick a string candy)'. There are different sized/flavoured candies on strings. When I was a kid, we could buy this at a newsagent. Pay ¥10 (5 pence) to a shop owner and pick a string carefully. It's almost impossible to get the one you want. I knew about this candy but I've never tried it. I found
Fruits biki (pick) by Kose in a wholesale shop, and I bought a box. I opened it when we had a cherry blossom viewing party the other day, but kids were the only one who ate those candies. Everybody knows it's not so tasty...

箱の中には30コ入の袋が2つ入ってます。500円くらいだったかな。アメじゃなくてチョコかクッキーだったらウレシイのに〜。
There are 2 plastic bags in a box. Each bag has 30 candies. It was about ¥ 500 (£2.56). I prefer if they are chocolates or candies.
ナツカシ〜♪…って、私も子供の頃自分では1回くらいしか買ったことナイかも!
暗くて恐いオジサンの駄菓子サンだったので、買いたくても行けなかったのね、きっと。
箱もイイ味出してますね☆
Hi Jun, I'm going to my parents this weekend, hopefully it will be good weather and I'll be able to find you some cool weird kitchen gadgets for your site. Silke and I have booked our tickets to come and visit you! We'll come for the end of May and start of June. It's going to be weird to see all your stuff from the site in the flesh. It will be like going to a cable shopping channel addicts house except not so scarey, I hope!! Nx
kakakoさん、私は子供の頃、駄菓子はあんまり興味なかったんですよね。友達が5円や10円のお菓子をアレコレと買っている横で、50円のアイスを堪能してました。かわいくない〜。
Hi Nigel! Hurray, you are coming to Tokyo with Silke!! Nothing is scary, don't worry. Everything will be just very weird! I'm looking forward to see you here, but let's have pints there first in 2 weeks time! Have a great weather and weekend (I forgot about the summer time has started over there) in a great place.
I'm really looking forward to seeing you! Yes we'll have pints and crisps! We could go to the Ritzy and see Kill Bill 2! The weather is really awful this week, you wouldn't believe how cold! It will be good in May though! I'm so please it's all finally sorted out, I bought a guide book today!
Hi Jun! Itohiki Ame!! Remember our idea of having them in 'our' shop in london!? Could you bring a few boxes (if you have space in your suitcase) for Saloon? I would love to give them away to my customers when they buy something.
Wow, Nigel and Silke are going to Tokyo too! You'll have a great time there Nigel! Make sure to get J + C to take you to Shirubei! (I'm sure they will!) Yes, we shall all go out for a few (or more!!) pints in a pub! It would be nice if it's warm enough to stand outside. That is when I most love London, when everyone is drinking outside at 5pm on a Friday afternoon... Giblin and I went to the Ritzy in Brixton to see Zatoichi a few weeks ago. We had some lunch in a Portugese canteen around the corner first! It was full of Portugese families having lunch in their Sunday best! Brixton rocks!
Hi Keiko, it will be great to all meet up soon. A few days ago I thought the weather was becoming suitable for outside drinking, but not now!! I'll have to drop by your shop again soon and check out the stock. I'm sure that I see things that you'd like when I visit my family at the seaside. But I'm not sure if you still have your retro section. In charity shops back home you often see amazing 1970's stuff that is really funky, often still in the original packaging!
Nigel, practice a few Japanese words! I think 'Sumima-sen' is very useful one. It could mean 'excuse me' or 'I am sorry' or 'Thank you'. Hi Keiko, I can bring a few boxes of Itohiki-ame but it's kind of disgusting... I hope your customers don't think all Japanese candies are awful! Having pints outside sounds so good!!
Yay, pints outside! Is the weather going to be good enough or do you mean pints outside with a thick jacket and gloves?
Oh, noooo... I just checked the weather in London. It's only 10℃! I hope it's get warmer when we are there. Today's highest temperature here was 21℃. We felt nostalgic, remembering summer time in London.
Hey Jun, Carsten! Recently the weather here in London is totally mad - a week or so ago the temperature went up to 20 degrees and then just last night was really cold when I went out (my teeth was chattering!). It even hailed too!! Totally mental. Totally typical UK weather...!?
Hi Tamami, I kind of like when it hails (I want to be at home though)! The weather here now is the perfect one for me. In 2 months time, the rainy season starts, and it will be super hot and humid after... I don't want to think about it! I miss UK supring/summer weather.
I have been looking for this Japanese string candy for 20+ years. does anyone know where I can buy this 'ito-hiki ame ??
