kouchi
On Wednesday, 22 September, we arrived at Kochi station at 19:40. After we checked in to our hotel, we went straight to an Izakaya that I found in my guide book. Kouchi is very famous for Bonito fish, so we had lots of tasty bonito dishes! The Katsuo no Tataki slices were huge and had lots of sliced garlic on top. I couldn't believe it! The Shuto mayonnaise sauce, which came with Deep Fried Bonito, was very interesting. Yum yum yum... Sake please!

The next day was also rainy. Many Japanese palm trees line the streets of Kochi, they made me aware that I was in a "southern country". Anyway, we went to Kochi castle. I also wanted to go to the Sunday market, but it wasn't opened on Thursday, so we went to Hirome market which is a kind of food court. There were lots of school students and tourists having snacks (bit strange atmosphere). We bought yakisaba (grilled mackerel) and maguro (tuna) sushi at a fish shop and paid only ¥700 (£3.56). A big, whole bonito was only ¥2,000 (we didn't buy it, of course). We had good coffee at Mephistopheles (it means a devil!), the building looked very German!

Hi I just came across with this site and felt delighted to see that someone posted about the places I’m so familiar with. I live not too far from Hirome ichiba & the Sunday Market street now, and often eat at Mephistopheles. Glad that you enjoyed the deep-fried haranbo:)

Hi obachan san, I think Mephistopheles is a great cafe. It looks very classy, but they serve Japanese style lunch too! I want one near my place. Everything was so OISHII in Kochi!
