fondue pot
I finally received a fondue pot which I won from an internet auction ages ago! This pot series is called Kobenstyle, made by DANSK and designed by Jens H Quistgaard in the 60's. I know that Kobenstyle has nothing to do with Kobe in Japan, but I want to know what it means... This fondue set turns up on internet auctions quite often, but usually the warmer stand is missing or the pot has wear and chips, or it's very expensive. Luckily this pot is in mint condition. I guess someone was given this pot and tried cheese fondue once and never used it again. But the iron warmer stand got rusty from a long time in a garage. Actually, the rust makes it seem more authentic to me. I'm not sure if I'll cook cheese fondue, but it might be good for keeping Oden warm on the table. ø16.5cm x H12cm (including a lid), it was $55 (¥5,735) including the shipping.

The pot says Dansk Designs France IHQ, but the warmer stand is Dansk Design Danmark IHQ. Maybe the shop owner made a mistake? There is another design for a wamer stand, the Dansk Design Germany IHQ looks like this, but I prefer my black solid stand. The antique shop in Japan always mention that the lid can be used as a trivet. I wonder if people actually use it like this? I hope there won't be any marks on a table from a red hot pot. Or is it meant to be used like this?

A beautiful pot, Jun!

"Kobenstyle" might have something to do with "K?benhavn" which is the name for Copenhagen in Danish. (Literally it means Purchase/Buy ("K?be") - Harbour or Port ("Havn"). So a slightly Anglicised version of the name to convey an urban Danish style of fondue consumption, perhaps?

Ah, my browser didn't render the o-slash properly. I try again: "København" (Copenhagen) and "Købe" (Buy/Purchase).

Ohh! Jens H. Quistgaard.. Funny coincidence, I was just looking to purchase the Dansk teak-wood handled stainless cutlery set on ebay too. Like I wrote before, I'm really fond of wooden handles on kitchenware.. So I've been on the search for sometime, but jeez, buying the whole set can get soo expensive...! I think I need to have a word with a certain mister.D...!

Very nice looking. You must have the nicest kitchen in Tokyo!

I have very fond memories of this pot. My parents used to own one when I was I child. We had great parties sometimes with cheese and other times with chocolate fondue. You definitely need to try the cheese fondue!

Jamesu, thank you :-)
You are the most knowledgeable person!!

Tamami, I don't know how the cutlery set looks like. But I'm sure they are very nice. Ask D to get it for you!

Jean, thank you! But it's not quite true :-(

Hi Tom, It's nice to hear your story! Was it blue or other colour? I want to try a fondue party but Gruy?re and Emmentaler cheese is very pricey in Japan! Maybe I can try a chocolate fondue first.

Ours was yellow. If you want to make cheese fondue you can buy excellent ready made cheese fondue at National Mart in Azabu. That's much easier than making it from scratch.

The Yellow colour is nice too! Thanks for the good advice. I will have a look at National Azabu super market :-9

Interesting comments! I can´t read the japaneese ones though. I live in Copenhagen and got to know Mr. Quistgaard personally because I designed his 80th birthday exhibition at the Arts and Craft museeum here in Copenhagen. And you are quite right - the name Kobenstyle is derived from the name København (Copenhagen) There are quite a lot of (used) Kobenstyle here i Denmark - but recently I found a japaneese website with new Kobenstyle - with a slightly different handle - but now I cannot find the websit again. Any help out there? Regards Mads

Hi Mads, welcome to LDK! I was very excited about your comment. You worked for Mr. Quistgaard! What was he like? I also wanted to see the exhibition you designed.

You can see the new Kobenstyle here. Are these selling only in Japan?! I have to say that original one is 100 times more beautiful than these new one. Is Kobenstyle popular in Denmark now? Obviously it's becoming very popular in Japan. I wonder how much an used Kobenstyle pot cost in your country...

Mads wrote:
Hi Jun - thanks for the warm welcome. And thanks for the link to the new japanees Kobenstyle. Mr. Quistgaard is a nice old man - he is still designing as he has done all his life. I have seen some of his folders - he has got thousands of drawings of all sorts of designs, graphic design, tableware, furniture, ceramics... A fantastic career! He was very pleased with the exhibition - (I also did the poster with the alphabet that Quistgaard designed) - which was made quickly and on a small budget - if you like, I can mail you some photos from the exhibition? Your e-mail? I have not seen the new Kobenstyle here in Denmark - the old ones are quite popular here in Denmark too, I am not sure what the prices are - are you looking for a particular one? Big, small, colour... I can get some prices for you, if you like. Maybe I should start an export of used Kobenstyle (and other Quistgaard stuff - maybe danish design in general - 50´es furniture...)to Japan or buy a lot and come to Japan - I have never been and would really like to go. I am a furniture designer and I think that the stuff I design would do great in Japan... Well, enough for now - I am hungry... Let me hear from you...

Thanks Mads, it would be interesting to see photos of the exhibition. I'm also interested in the alphabet designed by Quistgaard, I have not seen that one. If you want to send me some pictures, click on my name on the left of this comment. But don't worry about checking prices, I'm not really looking for any more pots - I'm happy with the ones I have (this fondue pot and a red cooking pot).
