natto
When I went to Precce in Nakameguro, I bought Hiyama Natto (fermented soy beans) from Hiyama in Akita prefecture. This natto is hand-packed in straw in the traditional way. The bean has a chewy texture and very nice flavour. It was the first time for me to eat natto in straw, but it tasted like the natto I used to eat when I was a kid. I made avocado natto and ate it all. C really hates Natto. He hates about the smell but also about the styrofoam natto container. I've never thought about it that way.

I could never get used to the smell or the look of natto. The slimyness! Recently though, slightly drunk, I decided to try 2 beans of Tamami's mums natto... and simply didn't the taste very much. slightly vinegary, it seems. Not for me. T's brother keeps recommending to try natto at a sushi bar, natto rolled in rice or so(?), which would probably convert me.

I really love natto! I sometimes eat it with rice and mayonnaise. I know it's a strange mix but... sugoku oishiii!

Hi dirk, Natto was vinegary?! Maybe you were quite drunk ;-) I want you to try this tasty natto with a strong flavour of beans. Natto in rolled sushi is cut in small pieces and it has no texture. C tried his first natto in sushi, I think that's why he hates natto! Well, you might like it though. I think the best way of eating natto is with freshly cooked rice. Andrea, I can imagine it's nice with mayonnaise. Do you put bit of soy sauce too? You might like natto pizza toast with mayonnaise and cheese. Apparently it's very nice!

Hi Jun, hi Dirk. I can understand why natto is usually not on the top of the list for the non-Japanese. I can't think of any European/Western dishes that is slimey in texture (do you know any?). I love all food that is slimey in texture (I know it sounds gross) like ocra (lady fingers), yama imo (Japanese root vegetable that is slimey) etc. So I really tried hard to like natto. Like a typical Kansai person I couldn't handle natto. But it looked so good when people were eating it that I kept trying. I am pleased to say I am finally getting to like it! I think it is definitely an acquired taste!

Well done Keiko! Welcome to club natto (I just made one). Do you also like nameko (slimy mushroom) and mozuku (slimy seaweed)? I didn't like them when I was kid but I do like them now. It's very interesting if there is no slimy food in Western food. Only rotten food becomes slimy?!

Hello Keiko, Hello Junko. 'Club Natto'.... that has a nice ring to it! :) Does it not have a slightly vinegary taste? I was only a little tipsy, so I cannot have gotten it that wrong. I will try it again in time, I think. Oh, and I wondered if natto can ever go off?! I mean, it is fermented already, so I figured not much can happen to it anymore... Am I right?

'Club Inter-Natto-nal' maybe?'

Club Inter-Natto-nal! What a great oyaji gag!! I like it. Maybe Tamami's mum put some vinegary condiment to natto? Natto doesn't become moldy but it does go off and smells bad, same as other fermented food like yogurt, miso or wine etc.
