恵比寿の東京都写真美術館で開催中のおたく: 人格=空間=都市を見てきました。展示コミッショナーの森川喜一郎さんの講義を聞いた事のある旦那の解説付きで見たので、興味深かったです。じゃなかったら「アキバ〜!」としか思わないかも。「なんだろうね、コレ」なんて言ってる他の客にも説明してあげようかと思ったくらいです。そしてコレが2004年ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ建築展のための展示物だったという事がすごくオモシロイなぁと思いました。タイミング良く、今夜8時から教育テレビの新日曜美術館でこの展覧会の事が放送されます。見てみようっと。
We went to the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography in Ebisu to see the OTAKU persona=space=city (in Japanese) exhibition. Everything looks very dodgy, full on Akiba culture! C went to a lecture by Kaichiro Morikawa (in Japanese) who is the commissioner of this exhibition, and I enjoyed this exhibition because of C's commentary. There weren't any explanation for each work, and many people were saying 'wow... ah, what are these?'. I was almost going to explain to them! The other interesting thing about this exhibition is that it was originally shown at the Biennale Venezia 2004 International Architecture Exhibition. And it finally came back to Japan. This OTAKU exhibition will be on TV tonight. It will be on NHK kyouiku (educational TV), Shin Nichiyou Bijutsukan (in Japanese), starts at 8pm, I'm going to watch it.

昨日は神田という普段なかなか足を運ばない所へ出かけたので神田まつやでゴマそばを食べました。ウリである江戸前下町の濃いつゆを味わずにゴマつゆにしてしまい、ちょっと邪道だったかも。隣りのおっちゃんのカレー南蛮もおいしそうでした。60を過ぎているオヤジサン達がたくさんいました。同級生なのか蕎麦屋の常連さん達なのか、誰かが入ってくる度に「あれ?久しぶり!ココ座れよ。」だとか「あのさー、ハマちゃんの住所わかる?」なんて感じに昼過ぎからビール片手に(蕎麦は頼む素振りも見せずに)楽しそうにやってました。創業明治17年(1884年。実は西暦で書かないとピンと来ない)木造2階建ての店は平成13年(2001年)に東京都選定歴史的建造物に選ばれてます。建物には2つの引き戸がありますが、右側が入り口で左は出口です。間違わない様に。
I hardly ever go to Kanda, but I was there yesterday, so I decided to go to the famous soba (buckwheat noodle) shop called Kanda Matsuya (in Japanese). Just after I ordered Goma-Soba which comes with a goma (sesame) flavoured dipping sauce, Curry-nanban (noodles in curry soup) was served to the old man next to me. His hot noodles looked very good! Actually I should have ordered normal soba, and tried their traditional Tokyo style strong dipping sauce (salty and darker in color than in Western Japan). There were lots of old men over 60 years old, sharing the bottles of beer and eating nibbles (not eating noodles!). I don't know if they were classmates or they became friends because of this shop, but they seemed good mates. When someone entered the shop, they said 'Hello! Take a seat here!' and started conversations like 'do you know Hama-chan's home address?'. This shop was established in 1884. In 2001, the old two storey wooden building was selected as a historical building in Tokyo (in Japanese). By the way, there are two doors, the entrance is on the right side and the exit is on the left!

ここのところずーっと折り畳みイス、そしてベンチにもなりそうなローテーブルを探しているんだけれど、ピンと来るモノに全く出会えません。なのにハビタのカタログには手頃な値段で良さそうな物がイロイロ載っていてため息が出ます。でもきっとロンドンに住んでいたらハビタ熱をあげることもなく「ロンドンの無印は商品がなんでこんなに少ないの!」なんて激怒するんだろうな。シンプルな家電あたりうらやましくて仕方なくなるのかも。隣りの芝が青く見えてるだけかな?!
These days, I've been looking for nice folding chairs and a low table which I can also use as a bench, and I can't find any! But there are lots of nice and reasonable items in a Habitat catalogue! It made me sigh!! But if I were in London, I probably don't care Habitat this much, and I might be complaining about MUJI in London because of their limited selection (MUJI in Japan has good appliances and food). Is it just 'The grass is always greener on the other side'?!

週末に苗場でスノボをしていた旦那の新潟みやげは「こしひかり饅頭」。おまんじゅうの皮の部分に小麦粉とこしひかり米の粉が使われてます。かなりマイナーなお菓子みたいですが見た目通りの味で裏切られる事もなく悪くないです。米俵の包みもカワイラシー。ちなみにおみやげ屋で売られている知名度の低いお菓子は洋菓子よりも和菓子の方がハズレがないと思っているのは私だけでしょうか。そしてさらに日本酒もお土産に買ってきてくれた旦那。ボード類は全てクロネコに頼んだとは言え、重いのにナゼわざわざ酒?と思ったら私の「新潟は米所で、日本酒もオイシイんだヨ」の一言を覚えていたみたいです。スバラシイ。旅先でその土地の名物を買うという日本のオミヤゲ文化をしっかりマスターしてます。
C went snowboarding in Niigata last weekend, and he brought Koshihikari manju for me. Koshihikari is the name of rice. They are baked buns, using wheat flour and Koshihikari brand rice flour, with bean paste filling. The wrapping paper is meant to look like a straw rice bag, it looks very cute and tastes alright. He also brought a bottle of Sake. Although he asked black cat (very good courier company called Yamato) to carry all his snowboarding equipment, I was wondering why he brought such a heavy gift for me. And I realised that I said 'Niigata is famous for rice, so they have lots of good sake brands too'. He remembered that! Great! He perfectly understands the omiyage culture!

週末、千葉に住む姉がツォップのパンを持って我が家にやって来ました。ココのパン、食べたかったんだ〜。ありがとう!
My sister, who lives in Chiba visited me last weekend. She brought bread from Zopf (in Japanese) in Chiba. Zopf is one of the best bakeries in the Kanto area, and I always wanted to try. Thanks!

昨日テトラパックを再利用してチョコを作った話を書いたついでに日本テトラパックのサイトを見てビックリしました。テトラパックくんというキャラクター、昔見たブラーのミュージックビデオCoffee & TVに出てくる牛乳パックとなんだかソックリ。さらに驚いたのがTV用広告で3Dになって動いているテトラパックくんの姿。まんまです!
Yesterday, I wrote that I re-used a Tetra Pak for making chocolate pate, and I checked the site of Tetra Pak Japan. I was very surprised to see their character called 'Tetra Pak kun'. He looks very similar to the milk carton in Blur's Coffee & TV video. Tetra Pak Japan even made a TV commercial with him. He is walking around just like the milk carton in Blur's video!

友人が持っていた福田里香さんのチョコ+スイーツ×ラッピングという本にバレンタインにちょうど良さそうなお菓子があったな〜と思い、図書館から借りてきました。ところがなんと作ろうと思っていたチョコレート・パテの写真のページが破かれているではないですか!ヒドい。とは言え、レシピの部分は読めたし、マシュマロ、クリーム部分を除いたオレオ、アーモンド、ドライクランベリーを溶かしたチョコと混ぜて型に流して固めるだけという簡単なお菓子だったので適当に作ってもアートな感じに出来上がりました。
I borrowed the book Chocolate + Sweets x Wrappings (in Japanese) by Ricca Fukuda from the library. My friend showed me this book last year, and I remembered that there was a nice recipe for chocolate pate. I thought it would be a good Valentine chocolate. But the picture page of the recipe was ripped! I couldn't believe it!! Anyway, I still could read the recipe: just add marshmallows, oreos (without cream), salted roasted almonds and dried cranberries to melted chocolate, and let the mixture set in a mould. It was very easy to cook and it looks very artistic!

昨日は友人Mといつもの安い寿司屋へ。Mが注文した「とろたく巻き」、一体なんなんだろうと思ったらトロとタクアンでした。なるほど、食感が全く違うふたつが一緒になってなかなかイイ感じ。サービスでもらった生わさび、欲しいなぁと思っていた鮫皮の長次郎のわさびおろしと一緒に出てきました。しかもドデカいサイズ。小さいサイズでいいから欲しいなぁ。
Yesterday, we went to a sushi restaurant with our friend M. She ordered Toro-taku which I'd never heard of. It was Toro (fatty tuna) and Takuan (pickled daikon radish), and I found that it was nice to have two different textures in my mouth. We got a fresh wasabi root for free, and it came with a sharkskin grater by Chojiro which I've always been wondering if I should buy or not. They use the huge one, but I think the smaller one looks better.

週末、とても仲良くしている友人が近所に引っ越してきました。ウレシイ。あと1時間でその友人と一緒に食事をするという時に、空腹に耐えられず旦那に赤ワインリゾットを作ってもらいました。日本のお米で作るとすぐドロドロになってしまうのが問題なのですが、今回の米のアルデンテ具合はかなりグッド。カルナローリ種という米がリゾットにイイらしいので今度はそれを用意しておこうと思います。でも同じ値段ならカルーチョスで売られてるカルナローリ米が買いたいな。
Our good friends moved to our neighbourhood on the weekend. I'm very happy about that! Just an hour before we were going to dinner with our new neighbours, I realized that we haven't eaten anything and we were starving. I asked C to cook Red Wine Risotto. It was very good (not because of I was super hungry). Cooking risotto with Japanese rice is quite difficult, because rice becomes sticky very easily. But this risotto was perfect al dente! I heard that Carnaroli rice is good for risotto. I need to get some for the next time. But I prefer to buy Carnaroli from Carluccio's, especially if they are the same price!

フィンランドを代表するデザイナーとして活躍したカイ・フランクが1981年にキルタを改良して出来たティーマシリーズ。一見フツーっぽいのに、使う度にやっぱりカッコイイなぁと思わせるムダの無いデザインです。ティーカップ、コーヒーカップ、マグカップの中から一番大きいマグカップを選んだけれど、コーヒーをガブガブと飲む我が家にはちょっとだけ小さいかな。それでもオフホワイトのオフ具合がイイので何を入れてもイイ感じ。マグの底には昔の懐かしいアラビアのロゴが。割らない様に気を付けないと。
One of the greatest Finnish designer Kaj Franck relaunched Kilta under the name of Teema in 1981 (Kilta is launched in 1952). Teema is very simple and it might look bit boring but its simplicity is great. There were teacups, coffee cups and mugs, and I chose the mugs because we drink lots of coffee. I love them although it would be nice if they were a little bigger. The mug has an old Arabia logo (instead of iittala logo) on the back. I have to be careful not to break them by accident!

ふー。日本VS北朝鮮。ハラハラした試合でした。サッカーは興味ないんですが、ワールドカップとなれば私もちょっと熱が入ります。でも、いつも気に入らないのがアナウンサーの興奮しすぎの実況中継。声をカラして絶叫されても引くんだなぁ。目立とうと思ってやってるのかも、なんて思ってしまいます。スポーツ中継はテレビの前の私達に思う存分絶叫させてくれるNHKがイイですね。
Phew! I've just watched a football game Japan vs. North Korea. It was an exhausting game to watch. I usually don't care about football, but the world cup is different! By the way, I really hate a commentary on Japanese sports TV (except NHK, like BBC). Why they always shout at the top of their voice? It's very annoying, and it seems like they are doing it on purpose. I don't want to hear them shouting, I want to shout!

今日2月8日は郵便マーク「〒」の日。ひらがなで「ゆうびん」と入力しても文字変換ができて、Unicodeでも表示可能のシンプルでかなりグッドデザインなこのマーク、1887年に発表されました。そして顔郵便マーク〠(ナンバー君)もこれまたステキで大好き。まだeメールもなく手紙をやりとりしていた時代、自分の住所を手書きする時には郵便番号の前に〠を描いてました。ヒマだったんですね。1998年に郵便番号が7ケタに変更になってからの新キャラクターポストン君とその他大勢とは比べようも無いくらいカワイかったナンバー君。「郵便番号はハッキリと」と頑張っていた彼が懐かしい。
118 years ago today, 8 february 1887, the logo of Japanese post office "〒" was announced. I think it is a very simple good design. We can display it with Unicode, and also typing "ゆうびん (means post in Japanese)" can be converting to "〒" in Japanese system. I also love "〠" the icon of postcode (his name is Number-kun). I drew 〠 next to my postcode when I used to write letters by hands. I miss him. He was very cute! In 1998, the new charactors called poston and others appeared. They don't look good at all.

週末、友人宅に招待されオイシイ物をイロイロイロイロとごちそうになりました。オリーブの串揚げ、初めて食べたけど美味しかった〜。さらにゴールドヴァッサという22Kの金箔入りの薬草系リキュールも味見。ゴージャス感たっぷりのこのお酒、ストレートで飲むにはキビシー甘さでした。
We were invited to a dinner party on the weekend, and we had lots of great food. I've never tried deep fried olives before, and they were very tasty. I also tasted an anise flavoured liqueur called Goldwasser. It has 22k gold flakes floating in it. Gorgeous! But it was too sweet to drink straight for me...

ドイツの赤ワインケーキ(ロートヴァインクーヘン)を焼きました。スパイスが効いていてホットワインを思わせる味なので冬のケーキなんだろうなぁと勝手に思ってます。今回は通常レシピの倍量で作ったので、ノルディックウェアの大きなクグロフ型もどうにかイッパイに。そして去年焼いたケーキよりも高さがあって横からの見た目が良くなってますが、味はちょっと自信ないかも。我が家のオーブンで焼くには大きすぎたみたいです。友人の家に持って行くのにヤバいなぁ。味見無しで持って行く勇気、自分でもスゴイと思います。しかもこんなにデカイ!
I baked German red wine cake (Rotweinkuchen). It tastes a bit like Glühwein (hot wine), so I guess this is a winter cake. I doubled the amount of the recipe (in Japanese) to fill up my huge mould from Nordic Ware. So the cake looks better than last year, especially from the side. It's higher! But I'm not sure about the taste. I think my oven is not big enough to bake this amount of cake. I'm going to take this huge cake to my friends without tasting. How brave!

今日は節分。マンションのエレベーターの中に大豆が4粒落ちていて笑いました。暦の上では明日から春。とは言え、外はまだまだ寒いですね。家の中にいると日差しでポカポカと暖房も要らないくらいですけど。去年の夏の暑さのせいで今年のスギ花粉は早いとかスゴイとかイロイロ言われてますね。春はスグそこって言われても憂鬱だな。
Today is setsubun. That must be why there were four beans in the lift at our building, it made me laugh. Spring starts tomorrow, according to the Japanese lunar calendar, but outside is still very wintery. When the sun is shining, our flat is warm enough without heating. I've been hearing that, because of the hot summer last year, we will have lots of pollen from Japanese cedar and cypress trees this spring . Depressing!!

気に入っていた無印良品の磁器製の保存容器が廃盤に。スパゲッティ入れだとかサイズもかなりイロイロ揃っていたんですがウチで使っているのは直径6.4cmx高さ7.3cmの小さいもの。開け閉めがラクチンな別売りのフタも購入して、台所に常備している3種類の塩を入れる容器として使ってます。さらに湯飲みとして使ったりもして。普通の茶碗よりもイイ感じです。定価税込み315円がセールになって170円。先週、丸の内の無印で思わずいくつも追加購入しました。
My favourite ceramic containers by MUJI will be discontinued items very soon. They have a wide selection of sizes including a spaghetti size, and I'm using only the smallest one which is ø6.4cm x H7.3cm. I also have additional easy re-sealing lids and use them as salt boxes. I'm using three varieties of salts in my kitchen. It is not meant to be, but I also use this container as a tea cup. it looks nicer than other cup. Last week, it was on sale for ¥170 (87p) and the original price was ¥315 (£1.61). I bought a few more of them.
