mosquito bite
I was bitten by a mosquito the other day. Already! It became very itchy, and I put a cross (I also call it "belly button") in the mosquito bite with my fingernail. My American friend, who saw me doing it, said 'I know it'. I thought that he learnt it in Japan, but he said that people do it in the US too! They do it for the same reason: to take away the itch, because it hurts instead! My friends from England and Germany didn't get what we were talking about. I know it's very silly but I was quite surprised!

I love your little animation Jun! I do this too ... but I don't find it works very well! I end up doing it several times but the itch still returns.

Thank you Lucinda. I'm surprised (and happy to know) that you do this too! H didn't know this trick! But, yes... actually, it doesn't really work.

I remember doing this when I was a child in Germany. I'm surprised your other German friends don't know this!

This is the first time I have ever heard of this, Jun! Your animation left me perplexed at first ('is this showing me how to make fake mosquito bites or something -- the wildlife equivalent of a fake tan?'), but I'll try it next time. Although upon further reading from you + Lucinda, sounds like I'd have to keep on hurting myself to stop the itching returning. Maybe adding another line would really stop it? (And also create a lovely snowflake mark on your hand?)

僕はいつも「田」の文字を書きます。それ以上はムリです。

Tom, you did it too! Great! Now I'm a bit disappointed that C doesn't know it :-( Jamesu, if you think it's not going to work, it doesn't. So, believe that adding more lines can help you! Actually, I start with just one line which is called "a coffee bean". kimunkiさん、「田」ですか!それは試した事なかったー! 次回は私も「田」にしてみます。 kimunki just told me that he usually writes 田 which is a Kanji character for a rice field! Nice one!

.. i must remember the rice field kanji, and the 'coffee bean'! :) I knew about making a cross with your fingernails onto a mosquito bite, but I annot say whether I knew this since germany or if it is something that I picked up in the UK.However, it only works for a few seconds. I used to get lots of mosquito bites at night and T. didn't get any, but now it is the other way around.Poor her. Oh, and did you know about cutting an onion in half and holding it on the spot where one has been stung by a bee? Apparently it really keeps the swelling down.

yess, I've been bitten a fair bit recently, at one point I had several bites all in one line down my back...! what's that all about...?! hope its not bed bugs?? crawling and biting, and then crawling a bit more and biting again?! Maybe I taste better than Dirk and need a second serving?! Anyways, somehow I also knew this cross trick! ;-)

jun wrote:
Hi Dirk, I always get lots of mosquito bites! I just bought anti-mosquito spray today. I'm scared of bees (I guess not only me). I was stung by a bee when I was a kid. I wish I knew the onion technique!

jun wrote:
Oh no, Tamami! Apparently, mosquitoes like blood type O the most, and B, AB, A. Maybe you are blood type O! Well, I guess this is completely wrong.

My Italian grandmother used to theach me the same when I was a child. I noticed when I eat a lot of sugar or I drink too much (water or alcohol), mosquitoes love me even more.

Hi Andrea, it is nice to know that people in Italy do the same! Actually I heard about if we drink alcohol, we create more carbon dioxide and our body temperature goes up, and mosquitoes love the situation. Better not drinking too much ;-)
