We chose the Subashiri-guchi route for climbing down. It was a fast descending route (2.5 hours without rest) with loose gravel and sand. There were not many huts and
Edoya (3.350m) at the 8th station was the only hut which offered burning stamps.
This guy was climbing down very easily, but it was very tough for me! After about an hour, my legs were so tired that I couldn't move them anymore! There was gravel in my boots! I ripped my pants from sitting on a rock when I tried to empty the gravel from my boots! I could see C and K far way waiting for me (sigh)! And lots of horseflies around my face! So noisy! Going down was much harder than climbing up!
We started descending at 07:09, and arrived at the Subashiri-guchi 5th station at 10:45. The shops were shabbier than at Kawaguchiko-guchi 5th station, but I guess shabby is better somehow. I had a craving for taking a bath and drinking lots of water and I couldn't believe that K was eating soft cream! He was genki!
We wanted to visit a hot spa or public bath and toast with beers. But we didn't plan in advance, so we didn't know where to go. We decided to take a bus to JR Gotenba station at 11:00 and arrived there at 11:55. I imagined that there would be lots of shops and restaurants, but there was nothing and the public bath was closed! We were completely covered with dust, but we went to a restaurant in a hotel, that was the only choice. And we did toast with beers!
There are only four express trains a day from Gotenba to Shinjuku, so we took local trains and a
Romancecar and arrived in Shinjuku at 15:39. It took 2 hours, but we all slept in the trains. The cab driver we took to our home was a mountain climber. He was happy to see
my stick with lots of stamps. In the end I got stamps from 16 places.
