When we were staying in Sapporo, we decided to go to a coffee shop called 'koe' ('voice'), about which I read (in Japanese) on Sapporo blogger Kakako's Shin Nichijo-teki Henteko Catalogue. The coffee shop looked very unique from the outside, so we were hesitating a little bit, but we found out that the shop owner was a nice middle-aged woman and the shop had been open for 40 years.
After we sat down, we couldn't believe what we saw on the menu. It said 'Hot Cola'! We were very curious, but we ordered coffee. I talked a little bit with the owner and we finished our coffee, then C and I decided that we should try the hot cola. When we ordered it, the owner said that this spring, Osaka TV had mentioned the hot cola and that there had been a few customers from Osaka coming to drink it. She kept saying 'People who haven't tried hot cola before feel embarrased about ordering it. If I see Osaka people who seem to hesitate to order, I ask them if they want hot cola'. I kind of understand that it is embarassing to order hot cola, but I was more worried about the taste!
The owner's niece is a musician signed to Sony Music and I noticed a huge poster next to the cashier. I thought that the name of the shop ('voice') was related to a singing voice, but she told me that the name means voice as a connection between people and that she wanted to have a space to hear lots of conversations. Oh, about the hot cola: It tasted like super-sweet (non-fizzy) lemon tea.
