The train journey (JR Okhotsk #01) from Sapporo to Abashiri took 5 hours and 21 minutes. I saw nice
plastic sea ice on top of a phone box near JR Abashiri station!
We took JR Kushiro-Honsen from Abashiri to Shiretoko-Shari (there are only
nine trains a day), it took 48 minutes. Then we took the Shari bus to Utoro-Onsen Terminal, the entrance of Shiretoko Peninsula. It took us 50 minutes (there are eight buses a day). There are not many trains and buses, so it's good to know the time tables beforehand.
After we got off at 'Shiretoko Shizen Centre', I realised that we meant to get off one bus stop earlier. We didn't want to wait for the next bus, so we decided to walk to where we thought about staying overnight. On the way to our accommodation, we saw Hokkaido deer as the sun was setting in the Sea of Okhotsk. After a 50 minute walk, we arrived at our
camp site. We were lucky to be able to rent a tent.
In the evening we had dinner at a local izakaya near Utoro-Onsen Terminal. Their sushi (about ¥6-700 for 3 pieces) was fatty and good (and big)! But I can't believe that they charged ¥1,500 for a piece of grilled salmon!!
