今回の旅行は札幌だけではなく、今年の夏に世界遺産に指定されたばかりの知床半島へも足を伸ばしました。しかし想像通り（それ以上？）にでっかい北海道。移動にずいぶんと時間をかけてしまいました。JRとバスを利用して、札幌から知床半島まで6時間59分。そう言えば、女満別空港をウマく利用するという手もあったっけ・・・。

Apart from Sapporo, we also went to the Shiretoko Peninsula, which was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites this Summer. Hokkaido is huge, so we spent a long time on trains and buses. It took us 6 hours and 59 minutes from Sapporo to Shiretoko Peninsula. There are also flights to the Memanbetsu airport, which I completely forgot about.

札幌から網走までJRオホーツク1号で5時間21分。網走駅の公衆電話ボックスにオホーツク海の流氷が乗っかってました。

網走から知床斜里までJR釧路本線（1日に9本）で48分。そこから知床半島の玄関口であるウトロ温泉ターミナルまでは知床斜里から斜里バスで50分（1日に8本）。乗り継ぎをウマく計画しておかないと駅で待ちぼうけをくらいます。

で、宿泊予定先の近くだと思った「知床自然センター」でバスを下車。ところがヒトツ前の停留所「ウトロ温泉ターミナル」で降りるべきだった事を知らされて愕然。次のバスまで待ちぼうけはイヤだったので相棒と歩きました。蝦夷鹿と出会ったり、オホーツク海の夕陽を眺めたりして50分ほど歩いてやっと目的地に到着。貸しテント（初体験）、空いててヨカッタ。

夕飯はウトロ温泉ターミナル近くの居酒屋で。3カンで6-700円のお寿司、トロケました。しかし、焼鮭が一切れ1,500円ってどうなのか！

The train journey (JR Okhotsk #01) from Sapporo to Abashiri took 5 hours and 21 minutes. I saw nice plastic sea ice on top of a phone box near JR Abashiri station!

We took JR Kushiro-Honsen from Abashiri to Shiretoko-Shari (there are only nine trains a day), it took 48 minutes. Then we took the Shari bus to Utoro-Onsen Terminal, the entrance of Shiretoko Peninsula. It took us 50 minutes (there are eight buses a day). There are not many trains and buses, so it's good to know the time tables beforehand.

After we got off at 'Shiretoko Shizen Centre', I realised that we meant to get off one bus stop earlier. We didn't want to wait for the next bus, so we decided to walk to where we thought about staying overnight. On the way to our accommodation, we saw Hokkaido deer as the sun was setting in the Sea of Okhotsk. After a 50 minute walk, we arrived at our camp site. We were lucky to be able to rent a tent.

In the evening we had dinner at a local izakaya near Utoro-Onsen Terminal. Their sushi (about ¥6-700 for 3 pieces) was fatty and good (and big)! But I can't believe that they charged ¥1,500 for a piece of grilled salmon!!

さすが世界遺産に指定されるだけあって、自然が深くて平和な感じの場所ですね。どーしても「網走から迷い込んだ脱獄囚が森の中からこんにちは」みたいなイメージしか湧かない自分の発想の貧困さがイヤになりました。むかし観たくだらない映画の影響だと思いますけど...

genさん、知床半島はキレイでしたよ。普段自然に触れる事がないので余計に感動しました。網走といえばやはり刑務所は切っても切れないイメージですよね。札幌行きの電車に乗る前に、他にする事もなかったので網走監獄博物館に行ってしまいました。さすがに網走刑務所には行きませんでしたけど。

へ～、そんな博物館があるんですね。ついでに監獄ホテルで「網走の夜を体験」みたいな....悪趣味ですね、スミマセン。知床、急に行ってみたくなりました。富良野とか夕張とか真ん中辺りまでしか行ったことないので。ただウチは蝦夷地と正反対の場所なんで、行くとなると一大決心です。

その博物館、昔使われていた建物をそのまま移築して建てられたそうです。博物館の食堂では刑務所と同じ食事ができると聞いて、ちょっとミョーな気分になりました。でも監獄ホテルも同じコンセプトなので体験したいって人、いるかも？知床、寒がりの人にはムリかもしれないくらい寒いんでしょうけど、流氷を見る、もしくは流氷ダイビングなんてのも雪国ならではの良さかもしれないですね。

There used to be an airline from Sapporo, which failed last year, because of JAL monopoly. Since, there is only one airline ( and no competition ) in Japan - is it expensive to fly from Tokyo to Sapporo? In Europe there are so many new airlines and very inexpensive. To fly from London to Berlin, it's only 19 Euro. By the way - a cool new airline is German Wings, for example: http://www4.germanwings.com/

There are JAL and ANA flying from Tokyo to Sapporo, and actually Hokkaido International Airlines AIRDO is still in business. They offer cheaper tickets than others! Good job!

Why don't you rent a car, instead of buses and trains? When I travel to japan, I rent a car, because I have more freedom to go where I want. Unfortunately, I always get an automatic car (like in America), which is very boring. I love to drive ONLY shift gear - more control and power.

In Europe, or elsewhere, is very RARE for japanese to rent a car. But you miss so many places, which are not easy to reach without it. Another reason why japanese, when traveling abroad, end up always in touristy places! And forget UNESCO Heritage Sites. The most beautiful places I have seen in the world, are not listed in the UNESCO !!!! UNESCO H.S. = mass tourists.
