gokatteya
I've known this Hokkaido Gokatteya Yokan (pronounced 'yoh-kan') since I was a kid, but I've never had a chance to taste it. A few weeks ago, I was shopping at a department store in Hokkaido, and this nice old style package design caught my eye. Yokan can be too sweet to eat for me, but this one was kind of light and delicate (but still very sweet) and nice. I've just found out that I don't need to travel to Hokkaido to buy this, it is available from Shibuya Tokyu Food Show (in Japanese) too. The one I had was a small version. 8cm long and ¥160. If you want to see the bigger picture, go to my flickr.

Pull out the string which is attached to the outside of the tube (hiding under the paper), and take the plastic top off. Push up the Yokan from the bottom with your finger, and cut it with the string. I have to say it is quite fun. Be careful not to eat too much!

おいしいそ〜!Actually I'm not into sweet stuff, but this packaging is very very nice! Tomorrow I have to go to Shibuya: for sure I will stop by the department store to buy one tube of yocan . Thanks for the information!

If you are not into sweet, this might be toooo sugary for you... Maybe it tastes better with some green tea? The shop is called Shokoku Meisan It's on the B1 floor in the Tokyu Toyoko department store, kind of locates in the South area. The shop is small, but there are full of some local sweets from all over Japan. Enjoy :-9

that string feature is nice! I eat youkan for cycling, especially on winter club runs. It reminds me of Scottish tablet it's so sweet. I'll look out for gokatteya in osaka too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scots_tablet

Wow, Scottish tablet seems very sweet too! I need espresso :-)
I hope you can find Gokatteya Yokan at a major department store in Osaka.
