I've been looking for lacquered Kaiseki-zen trays with legs. This kind of tray is only used in traditional Japanese-style restaurants nowadays. I was happy to find a good antique set on an internet auction. Usually the mass-produced lacquer products I can afford are made of plastic or molded woodchip, but the base of these trays is natural wood. It needs more care but it's nice to have real wooden lacquerware.

I really like the wooden box they cam in, it says "Wajima Nuri (Wajima lacquerware), Syu Kagu (red lacquered furniture), five" in nice calligraphy. There's also a nice smell of hinoki (Japanese cypress). But the box is too big, I don't know where to store it... This style of Kaiseki-zen is called Souwa-zen, and it is used for guests or special occasions. I think this kigu-zen and this kaiseki-zen look good too. They're antique, but they were intended for daily use. I might have to think about a renting a room for my kitchen collections soon, or I have to just stop shopping.
