After the race, Toyota Racing's Chairman and Team Principal Tadashi Yamashina said: 'I would like to say congratulations to Fuji Speedway for hosting this race for the first time in 30 years. The facilities here are excellent and the race was well organised. It is a shame we could not get the result we wanted in this race' (btw Toyota owns Fuji Speedway). Well, it is a shame that he thought the facilities were excellent! There were so many websites in Japanese writing about how badly this
2007 Japanese GP was organized. I'm a little slow, but I also think Suzuka was more fun. I picked up some problems here:
Fuji Speedway adopted a
Ticket and Ride system that combined an admission ticket with bus transportation to help ensure trouble-free access, but it didn't work well:
about 20,000 spectators had been forced to stay in the outlying circuit for up to four hours after the qualifying.
Fuji Speedway announced that the long queues for buses at the West Gate were caused by a sudden cave‐in in the road, but there were also super long, four hour queues at the East Gate, even though there were no cave-ins in that direction!
Fuji Speedway announced that the road caved in because of the rain on Saturday morning, but apparently the cave-in was found on Friday and anyway it wasn't raining that hard on Saturday morning. Fuji Speedway didn't do anything about the cave-in, so there was a huge traffic jam on Sunday too. It's good that
85 fans will be reimbursed for transportation, hotel and other expenses because their shuttle buses did not make it to the circuit until 30 minutes after the start of Sunday's race, but the 85 people on the F1 tour bus were not the only people who missed the start of the race! There were lots more people!!
After the final, there were hundreds of people waiting for the bus to Gotenba and only one young guy was trying to organise the queue. Of course it didn't work well. We had to wait for three and a half hours, some people waited for six hours.
Fuji Speedway prohibited spectators from setting up flags and banners to support their teams and drivers, but
Toyota, the owners, were using huge flags!
Compared to Suzuka circuit, there was too little space to sit down for eating and there was no space to avoid the rain. The food was bad quality and expensive. I had to laugh about the
F1 GP Bento which cost ¥10,000!
Before this event was held, the organisers were saying that 'under the basic theme "Endless Beauty, Unlimited Excitement - F1 Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji Speedway", the event will be organized according to three major policy guidelines: 1) providing services based on advanced safety and high quality, 2) offering a variety of ways to enjoy F1, and 3) contributing to and encouraging participation by the local community'. Oh well, maybe they will do better next year, but maybe they should leave it to Suzuka in the future...
