gourmet manga
I don't usually read manga, but I used to read Oishinbo, the gourmet comic (the cover looks like this). I felt like reading Oishinbo again, so I went to a library. The librarian told me it is available only in a set of fifteen, and it came with a special library bag! When C saw the bag, he was really amazed (or amused) about Japanese manga culture. And I guess sixty volumes were too many to borrow at once...

chocolat chaud
After I finished reading It Must've Been Something I Ate, I decided to make chocolat chaud (hot chocolate drink). The recipe in the book is based on a recipe the auther received from Pierre Hermé, so I was very excited. I used my favourite Lindt chocolate (70% cocoa, which was recommended by the book) and Dean & Deluca's cocoa powder from Holland, which I bought at a super sale.

special curry
I'm hooked on Wo Wen's recipe books, especially Wo Wen no Oishii yo! Uchino Gohan, it's the greatest. (Thanks for the recommendation, M!) All the recipes are simple, easy, lots of vegetables, and very homey. Also, her combinations of ingredients are very creative, some of them sound a bit weird, but I was satisfied every time after I followed her recipe. Today, I cooked 'Chicken wing with Hijiki seaweed and Wakame seaweed Curry' from her book. I've never seen curry with seaweed, but it was very nice. I guess Hijiki seaweed doesn't look very attractive (the Wakame seaweed had softened and disappeared) but it tasted good and is very healthy. The curry had the full scent of the sea! Summer is almost here!

Yesterday I found a nice recipe book in the library. It is called ’Bio Farm Matuki’ no Yasai Recipe zukan (Bio Farm Matuki’s encyclopaedia of vegetable recipes). We both love meat and fish, so I don’t think we will become vegetarians. But these days I’ve been thinking to eat lots more vegetables, and less meat. This recipe book has simple and easy recipes, and also unique recipes such as Grilled Onion with Honey and Coriander Seeds or Roasted Hakusai (Chinese Cabbage) in Anchovy Sauce. They all look good!

salsa mexicana
On Saturday, lots of our friends, including their two little sons came to our flat. I always wanted to cook Mexican, not Tex-Mex. So I carefully followed the recipe book called Miryoku no Mexico Ryouri (Fascinating Mexican Food) and I first made Salsa Mexicana on Friday. The vegetables on the picture are for 1kg of Salsa, but after I peeled and seeded the tomatoes it didn't look enough for 1kg of Salsa. So I decided to use seven tomatoes in total (about 1.3kg), but it turned to only 846g of Salsa! After leaving Salsa overnight, the onion flavour is not too sharp anymore and it was nice refreshing salsa.

chocolate pate
I borrowed the book Chocolate + Sweets x Wrappings (in Japanese) by Ricca Fukuda from the library. My friend showed me this book last year, and I remembered that there was a nice recipe for chocolate pate. I thought it would be a good Valentine chocolate. But the picture page of the recipe was ripped! I couldn't believe it!! Anyway, I still could read the recipe: just add marshmallows, oreos (without cream), salted roasted almonds and dried cranberries to melted chocolate, and let the mixture set in a mould. It was very easy to cook and it looks very artistic!

bamboo steamer
When we were in China Town the other day, I went to Shou Hou (in Japanese) and finally bought a bamboo steamer that I always wanted. Shou Hou, a famous Chinese kitchen gadget shop, sells many bamboo steamers, so it took me a long time to decide which one to buy. Finally I got a 21cm two tier bamboo steamer with a lid. The shop has three different price ranges: the cheapest one, made by a machine and using imported wood, is ¥2,400. The middle range uses a better quality of wood and a better structure - it costs ¥3,900. The hand made one using Japanese cypress wood is ¥9,000. Shou Hou's hot iron branded logo on the side of the steamers is quite well-known. I really like the logo and I realised that it is available only on the most expensive one, other steamers have red or black ink stamps. But they've changed the design of the beautiful branding iron! At the shop there were still some steamers with the old brand, but not in the size I wanted. Without the old brand logo, I lost the half of my interest in the most expensive steamer! Anyway, the bark latch on the cheaper ranges looks cuter than the metal brackets on the most expensive one. I chose the middle range, even though C told me that I could get the most expensive one...

donabe
I borrowed a book called 'Arimoto Yoko no Dougu Erabi' (Choosing Kitchen Tools by Yoko Arimoto) from a library. The book design is very simple, printed in black and white, I liked it. Inside the book, I found too many kitchen gadgets that I want to have, especially this donabe (a Japanese earthenware pot), it's a beauty. I fell in love! We use our Le Creuset pot to cook hot pot dishes, but it doesn't give me the right atmosphere, so I wanted to buy one. The hot pot season starts soon. I checked the price on the site (Japanese only) and... I'm heartbroken! I can't spend four ¥10,000 notes for a donabe!

It was a few months ago, my net friend M mentioned about the diary from Banana Yoshimoto Official Site. And I started to read Banana' books recently, on a train and on my futon before going to sleep (It's been about 10 years since I last read her book Kitchen). I've read three of her books, and I still don't know if I like her style or not. But I noticed that there is definitely something very special about her. And other thing, her stories are quite short, I like that!

I love cooked soft boiled eggs from Naomi Takayama's recipe book. I cook these eggs somtimes. But I boiled the eggs too long this time! I want to eat them with coriander but that's quite expensive in Tokyo, so I use thinly striped Japanese leek instead.

I went to a public library which is only 3mins walk from our flat. Sometimes I feel like reading printed materials, not only internet! At the newspaper and magazine room was so packed, and the average of users' age was easily over 50! Some men were constantly coughing. This is not a hospital! I was going to read novel but all 5 books I borrowed are about food and house keeping...
